Frequently asked questions

General questions

Stellar-learning.app is an application that supports learning vocabulary of a foreign language and is available on smartphone, tablet or laptop. The application is based on a scientific approach to make learning as effective as possible.
Stellar-learning.app was designed for teachers and their students. The app enables teachers to create their own word-lists and lessons. Teachers can monitor the progress of their students in vocabulary learning through a personalized dashboard. Students are using to app on their mobile device or on the web to learn vocabulary easily and interactively.
The application incorporates learning principles validated by research on memory and applied pedagogy. These principles, such as the type of feedback given to students or the spacing of lessons, can be manipulated within the application.

For now, stellar-learning.app is only available to a limited number of users who are participating in a study to scientifically evaluate the application. If you are a teacher and would like to participate in this study with your classes, please contact us at projetscolaire@unidistance.ch.

Technical questions

You can try to speak more slowly and more clearly. If your phone is in a cover, remove it while using the app. Using headphones or earphones with an integrated microphone sometimes helps. You can also try talking directly into the microphone.
Lessons are made available according to the schedule set by your teacher. If no lesson is available, it is because you have completed the last lesson, but the next lesson has not yet started. Ask your teacher when the next lesson begins.
Sometimes and only for some students, the app says it cannot present a learning session because the microphone and/or sound have been deactivated. The reason for this lies in the specifics of our research study. You can simply omit this by turning microphone and loudspeakers back on or until you can.
This is normal and is part of the learning principles built into stellar-learning.app. Thus, you will receive a correction for some words but maybe not for others.
Yes, as when learning with a book, it is important to review each word several times in order to learn them correctly. This happens more often when there are only few words in the list. In addition, to increase the variety of words encountered in a session, we invite you to allow the use of the microphone and sound as much as possible.

Notifications are only sent when you use the native mobile version of the app and indicate using it on a personal device when you log in. To do this, log out and log in again. After your reconnection, you will see the screen shown below. Be sure to select “personal device” to allow notifications to be received. Reminders begin to be sent after you completed a first session with the mobile app.

It is also possible that despite the indication of the use of a personal device, you still do not receive a notification. This happens, for example, when you use a web-browser to access the app either on a computer or on your mobile device. This is perfectly normal as notifications are only sent if your browser remains open permanently on the stellar-learning.app page. If you want to receive notifications, we advise you to use the native app for phone or tablet. You can directly dowload them from the App Store or Google Play store.

To use the microphone optimally on tablet or smartphone, do the following:

         1. Press and hold the recording button (next to the microphone picture)

         2. When the microphone picture starts blinking, wait a moment and start talking

         3. Release your finger after you finish talking, the icon stops blinking

To use the microphone optimally on a computer, do the following:

         1. Click on the recording button once (microphone picture)

         2. When the microphone picture starts blinking, wait a moment and start talking

         3. Click again on the recording button after you finish talking, the icon stops blinking

You can also watch the animation below for a demonstration of the use of the microphone when using stellar-learning.app with a browser.

Questions about connection problems

Your username and password are case sensitive. This means that they must correspond exactly to what was indicated when you registered and respect the capital and lower case. The presence of additional space can also make the connection impossible. For example, if your login is ‘’tom1’’ and you enter ‘‘Tom1’’ (capital instead of lower case on the T) or ‘’tom 1’’ (extra space between ‘’m’’ and ‘‘1’’), you won’t be able to connect. If after verifying that the login and password entered are correct but you still can’t log in, contact the address projetscolaire@unidistance.ch to reset your login and password. Please indicate the username, class and school of the affected student.
Yes, that is normal. During a session, if you stop using the app for 10 minutes, your session ends automatically. Don’t worry, your progress is still counted, and you can start another session right away.
On your mobile phone, go to Parameters -> Applications and look for Stellar Learning. Click on the icon and you will access the app-related information. You can find on this page which version you are using.
We suggest you enable the automatic update of stellar-learning.app in order to benefit from the best experience when using the app. If you prefer to update the app manually, go to the Play Store if your phone runs with Android or to the AppStore if your device runs with iOS. Search for “Stellar Learning” and if an update is available, it will be indicated on the store.
Sometimes, the app will continue working if you just wait a few seconds. If the problems persist, try to restart the app. If problems persist, we would be grateful if you could share the details of the incident with us at projetscolaire@unidistance.ch. Details to be provided to us are: description of the incident, time of incident, username used, device used (e.g., mobile phone, computer), device brand (e.g., Samsung, Apple), OS version, and version of stellar-learning.app. (e.g., 1.6.14).
