Goal and rationale of the study

The primary goal of the project is to investigate if learning apps benefit learning beyond traditional learning approaches. Therefore, we cooperate with teachers who are either using our stellar-learning.app as part of their language classes or not. A comparison of students in classes using the app with students of classes not using the app will elucidate whether the stellar-learning.app benefits vocabulary learning or not. Despite the wealth of existing learning applications, scientific evidence for their effectiveness is quite rare. Therefore, this project critically contributes to the evaluation of digital learning aids more generally.

The rationale of the research project builds on three pillars to optimize foreign vocabulary learning:

  1. teachers’ knowledge about and experience with teaching the acquisition of a foreign language
  2. software developers’ knowledge and skills in developing reliable software solutions
  3. cognitive scientists’ knowledge about basic principles of learning and memory
